We all share feelings of horror, anger, fear and more about Trump's unconstitutional, ego-driven decision to start a war with Iran. Unfortunately, there is not much we can realistically do to change the trajectory in the days ahead.
Does that mean we do nothing this week except wring our hands and doom scroll the news? No f-ing way! Here's a very important action we CAN do this week, thanks to the leadership at Indivisible National. Lets all sign up and do our part this week!
Email from Indivisible National:
"After months pledging that Trump would sign his Medicaid-slashing, billionaire-enriching reconciliation bill by July 4, Senate Republicans are now sprinting just to line up a vote by that date -- with weeks or months of back-and-forth with the House likely to follow. Their delay is due, in large part, to our collective pressure on Congress and our work making this bill politically toxic.
Now, we’re turning the pressure up even further by calling millions of Medicaid recipients about stopping the cuts next week! Will you volunteer two hours June 23-26 to connect at-risk Medicaid recipients directly to their GOP senators? Join our phonebank alongside WFP, MoveOn, and other partners to mobilize millions of Americans this bill could harm most. Shifts are open Monday-Thursday, June 23-26, from 6-8pm ET / 3-5pm PT. VOLUNTEER NOW!
Since the reconciliation bill squeaked through the House a few weeks ago, the Senate has proposed dramatic changes -- only adding to the divides between right-wing and far right-wing factions in the party:
ON MEDICAID, Senate Republicans plan to cut funding even further and shift more of the financial burden onto states. That’s making “budget hawks” happy but risks losing support from vulnerable Republicans in both chambers. Republicans also remain deeply divided on so-called work requirements. They're all more than happy to take healthcare away from people, but who and how many will be cut is driving internal strife.
ON STATE/LOCAL TAXES, Senate Republicans blew up “the SALT Deal” that Speaker Johnson needs to keep blue-state Republicans in line. Without a resolution, House Republicans from New York, California, and other blue states may flip to NO votes.
ON ENERGY INVESTMENT, Republicans in both chambers remain wildly divided over tax incentives for eco-friendly purchases like electric vehicles. Hard-right Republicans want them cut entirely and immediately; most others -- even their top donor Elon Musk -- disagree. Neither side seems ready to back down.
ON JUDICIAL POWERS, Senate leaders plan to replace the House’s No Contempt Clause with a different, but no less horrifying, attack on courts’ ability to hold Trump officials in check. It’s a dangerous ploy that likely runs afoul of Senate rules.
There are no easy fixes for Republican leadership here. The divides are so deep, and the cuts so politically toxic, that we have a real shot at flipping four votes to stop reconciliation in the Senate outright like we did in 2017.
And passing this bill through the Senate isn’t even the hardest part! Either the House will have to vote again to pass the Senate’s version, or party leaders will need to come up with a third version that can pass both chambers.
We can kill this bill by building a strong, cross-party coalition of Americans who strongly oppose it. That’s why we’re calling Medicaid recipients and urging them to connect with their senators.
Republicans hope to queue up Senate votes on this horrific bill as soon as next week. Let’s not waste a moment ensuring they hear our voices and feel our anger. Shifts are open Monday-Thursday, June 23-26, from 6-8pm ET / 3-5pm PT. VOLUNTEER NOW!"
